The N400 is an event-related potential (ERP) component thought to be involved in processing meaning and semantic information. It manifests as a negative voltage which peaks at about 400 ms after stimulus onset, hence the label N400. The N400 was originally discovered in 1980 by Marta Kutas and Steven Hillyard in an experiment investigating ERPs to words in sentences.

They found that the N400 was especially prominent in response to words that were semantically incongruent with the context of the sentence. That is, words that are contextually expected, like "butter" in the sentence "The boy spread the warm bread with butter", resulted in a smaller N400 than words that were not semantically related to the sentence, like "socks", which resulted in a larger negative shift. This was not merely a negative shift response to word incongruity, since in the experiment, only semantic incongruities caused an N400, while physical incongruities resulted in a late positive response.
